Wild Guide Wales: Hidden places, great adventures & the good life (Wild Guides)

My Favorite New Series
I have the Wild Guides for Wales and Scotland (had to order from overseas for the latter) as well as the Bothy Bible. The book materials are excellent quality and as much a pleasure to hold as they are informative. The layouts are sensible and you aren't overloaded with unnecessary gibberish. As a useful guide it's first rate for people who just want to do natural scenery, and a perfect supplement for people who want to try to combine a culture trip with the outdoors in the summer, when the sun is in the sky until 10 but most attractions have closed their doors, except for pubs.
Excellent guide spoilt by problems with OS Grid references
This is an excellent guide to off-piste attractions in the Wales and its English borders. Each place has a description and a weblink to Bing maps so you can get route information. The authors strongly suggest taking an Ordnance Survey map for many of the places but unfortunately have only given Lat Long coordinates in the body of the text. There is a list of Ordnance Survey grid references in an appendix at the back of the book but it is basically unusable, especially in the Kindle edition, as it's difficult to get to and from the relevant pages. Why on earth didn't the authors put them in the body of the text alongside the Lat Long? This feature really spoils an otherwise excellent book.
Absolutely brilliant guide book for explorers/wild swimmers/touring
I love this book so much that I’ve also gifted copies of it to 3 of my closest friends! It is a priceless addition to my OS maps and walking guides, whenever I’m planning a trip into Wales. I take it with me, every time I go exploring. It’s an incredibly well thought out & laid out book, categorised by region - covering wild swimming spots, ancient woodlands, historic landmarks/places of interest, recommended places to eat & places to stay. Each region includes a map so that you can see at a glance where everything is - making planning a trip really easy. I often combine 3-4 things in a day - exploring ancient sites, visiting magnificent old trees, a spot of wild swimming and a cafe stop - which are all conveniently located close to each other on the regional maps! Have found some real hidden gems with this book, and still have mid & South Wales to explore with it. Highly recommend this book to anyone who loves exploring and finding new places in Wales.
A gorgeous book that made our holiday truly magical
I bought this book on a whim before a short break in mid Wales. We’re Welsh, and still live on its border, so thought we knew it pretty well, but this book helped us to find places we’d never have gone, from an idyllic wild swimming spot all to ourselves to 1000 year old yew trees in enchanting ancient graveyards. At a time of social distancing, it enabled us to enjoy solitude in some of the most stunning, but ‘off the beaten track’ parts of our incredibly beautiful homeland. Loved the sumptuous images and the gentle humour of the text. Thank you, all who contributed, for absolutely making our holiday!
Excellent book for some of the best places in Wales hidden and popular!
Brilliant book. Went on a weekend away in Llanrhystud not too far from Aberystwyth. We took the book with us and we were able to find the nearest coastal walks and great beach....actually went on the Llangrannog coastal walk and ended up on Llangrannog beach. I keep the book in my car so I can find hidden gems wherever I travel in Wales....and I do a lot of traveling for work!
No better guide book
We have a YouTube channel called Campervan Tales and these Wild Guides are excellent reference books for us as we travel around filming our travels. Extremely informative with excellent points of interest. This edition is a great addition to the series.
Lovely book, beautifully presented with some great ideas.
A very nice book full of suggestions for wonderful, off-the-beaten-track places I would love to be visiting now. Accessible writing style, well presented visually, and peppered with pics of the authors wild-swimming in the all-together in beautiful streams and lakes (rather them than me). Most of the locations seem suitable for children also but there are clear warnings to always check water depths and other things before jumping in. Really gives you the feeling that Wales is waiting to be rediscovered in all its glory.
Brilliant quality book with fab ideas.
I bought this book for my Dad who lives in South Wales for Christmas. He loves wild camping and outdoors activities. He was very pleased with it, found a great spot for a dog walk and went the very next day! It's difficult to find somewhere he doesn't know about, I'm very glad I got this. Also the cover and finish of the book was impressive quality.
Excellent book for visit ideas
Excellent book for visit ideas, all of the WIld Guides I have seen are very good. High on photos, low on text, but thats all you need as an inspiration really.
